Keep It Alive, Part 1: Using Email to Stay in Touch with Your Network

Guess what? Today you will be taking field trip!

No permission slip required.

The goal: to your inbox.

Here's your first task:

Start by going back to your oldest stored e-mail message. Maybe it's from last year. Perhaps it is from the last month. Perhaps it is from the last century. But spend the next half hour you work your way back to the present.

By re-examining the past, e-mail that you come on people, messages and questions you have completely forgottenall about. One might think: "Wow, I wonder what Karen's been up to lately?" Or "Hmm … I do not know Mike's name. Better re-read his message to refresh my memory."

Either way, this journey of the E-memory lane, the perfect training tool to train the muscles in the form of networking. And if just one person that you have not mentioned otherwise, would restore, it will be worth it.

Ok. Here is your second task:

Another underusedFunction is to remain in contact with the e-mail auto-completer. Depending on which mail client you should use, you can do this in a few quick steps:

1. Go to "New Message".

2. Punch each letter of the alphabet.

3. You should be prompted with a dozen or so potential e-mail addresses starting with the same letter. Choose a name and e-mail away!

It's actually quite funny. You'll see the name completely forgot!

Gmail is goodthis. They provide you with a drop-down box. It reminds you of anyone you ever send an e-mail (or e-mail from) over the years.

Try to take this: every once in a while, a few minutes and only go through the whole alphabet. You never know whose name might come! And a simple, "We no longer talk for a while, so I thought I'd only delete a line and say, hey!" Is the perfect way to connect with an old friend or colleague.

Ultimately, a monthly e-mail runsSearch is the perfect tool for Keep It with old contacts, friends and prospective Alive.

Perhaps it is simply in a check-in Procedures ".

Perhaps it is an answer to an old message that you forgot.

Perhaps it is an e-mail update to an old friend you have not talked in a while.

Anyway, people look forward to your follow-up.

Plus, you never know: you could make a sale, again with old friends, even surprise someone!

And sure, it couldseem like extra work.

But remember, the last four words of NETWORK are WORK!

I wonder YA THIS …

How do you keep it alive?

Let me THIS …

Give me the best, "Keep it alive technique for a future article!
